ANDREW MCCLELLAND’S SOMEWHAT ACCURATE HISTORY OF PIRATES (1550-2017) (Big Laugh 11/03/05)

Professor McClelland shows you that when it comes to pirates ,you know nothing!

That is true, everything I learned about pirates came from ‘Muppet Treasure Island’. I know it involves, hooks, planks, parrots and shivering someone’s timber. Oh and Tosswinkle.

Somewhat eccentric, somewhat foppish, like an Aussie Hugh Grant uni lecturer, McClelland takes great delight in deconstructing the myths and inaccuracies of pirate lore. Syphilis reigned more than walking the plank. Less Wenches, more pressing benches.

“Because in those days a sailor was supposed to be married to the sea. And the sea was very definitely not a lesbian.”
