In the comedy circles I’ve travelled, let’s just say I’ve read some weird fiction in my time. Some real weird shit. Like I can never look Paul McDermott or Wil Anderson in the eye kind of weird shit and I didn’t even write it. So I didn’t quite know what to expect with Fanfiction Comedy. But it has a large cult following so I thought I’d check it out. Luckily my fears were allayed.
FanFiction comedy is comedians reading out passages they have written about their favourite things.
Hosted by David Tennant look-alike Nick Gibb, Joseph Moore, Heidi O’Loughlin and Steven Boyce were joined onstage by Phil Wang and Dave Anthony.
First up Joseph Moore’s delightful synopsis of the next Fast & Furious franchise ‘. . . and 8’ that takes place in Melbourne.
Followed by Phil Wangs brilliant take on the Dark Knight who was forced to work under the limitations of a correct timeframe. Possible new career in acting for one audience member for her portrayal as the Joker.
Dave Anthony. Dear God I can never look at an onion the same way again. His sublime tale of the life of an onion took a dark turn when the vegetables were attacked by something worse than ISIS – Tony Abbott. Absolutely spot on.
And finally Heidi O’Loughlin. Nominated for Best Newcomer at this years Barry Awards (and hopefully winner). I am very touchy when it comes to Les Miserables. It is my favourite musical and book. But Fiona’s rendition to make it a happy ending was worth it’s weight in gold (and hair and teeth).
